Hopefully you’re not like me and super late to discovering Portland-based artist, TYuS. While I had heard the name before, I didn’t know that a) he was an R&B singer, and b) that some of his songs make for excellent winter listening. In fact, it wasn’t until earlier this week that I actually got around to listening to his full length debut Never Forget while being couped up and snowed in. But if you’re also late to the party, “Stay” is a great place to start (and there’s also a “bedroom version”). If you’re feelin’ it, give the rest of the album a shot; it’s a super sexy project that one can really vibe-out, and clean an entire living space to.
One listen to “My Way” and you’ll see why his vocal and production style has been compared to the music of PartyNextDoor and Bryson Tiller. As an avid R&B and soul music fan (these are the genres that I predominantly listen to), I must admit that I’m kind of shocked that this kind of gritty-yet-tender modern R&B was born out of Portland. Here I was thinking that Blossom was the only quality soul singer this town could claim.
So you can bet your ass I’ll be in attendance at his show next Wednesday at the Hawthorne Theatre! The all-ages gig will include opening sets from Jonny Cool, A-Russ, and Cassow, who’s featured on “Between Us” from TYuS’ new album.
