Spa3man Rocks A Day Party
Spa3man Rocks A Day Party

Once again it is that time of the year where artists from across the world converge on Portland’s sister city – Austin, Texas – for the international music festival, SXSW.  Spac3man, one of our favorites here at WOHM, is making his third trip to the popular Spring Break destination to show off his Northwest style.

I got a chance to catch up with Space before he took off to talk about his song Come Together getting placed on the soundtrack of the popular movie 21 & Over. Getting a song on a major motion picture is a big deal; in an economy where artists cannot rely on album sales to generate income, licensing is where the money’s at. With his edgy and carefree style, I’m not surprised to see Spac3man picking up mainstream attention.

Here’s what he had to say about it:

Mac: What’s good with you, Space? How’s life?

Spac3man: I’m blessed. Life is coming full circle. It’s good to still be here.

M: What are you working on?

S: A LOT! My new EP, Beyond the Stars.

M: I’m sure every rapper out here wants to know how you got your song on the 21 & Over soundtrack. That’s a huge placement!

S: The producer, DJ Suspence, actually works in licensing. So we created the song along with vocals from Marissa G. for a beer commercial. It actually landed on 90210 (Season 5, Episode 6), then 21 & Over. You can Google soundtrack websites you can upload your music to and if they find it and like it you will get an email or call.

M: Your style has always been uniquely gritty and high-energy. Do you feel it’s benefitted you to sort of be in your own lane?

S: Yes, that was the first compliment that stuck with me since I been doing music. I see that as being a burden too because it’s harder to break a fresh sound. But it’ll pay off.

M: Are there any NW artists whom you want to work with but have not had the chance yet?

S: My APM gang: Mac Smiff, Tre Blaze, TxE, of course. Outside the gang: Mikey Vegaz, Illmaculate, Candidt, Avatar Darko, Nacho Picasso, Cam The Mac, V Dewayne, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Khalil (Khingz), Walker Montana, Steezie Nasa, EVERYONE… As long as the music makes sense!

M: Honored I made the list! So how are things over at Sportn’ Life? Nice to see Nissim back!

S: Management being worked out. It’s productive and all love. Nissim can’t stay away. It’s his calling.

M: I heard you have a few showcases lined up for SXSW this year. Congrats! Can you tell our readers where and when?

S: Yes! Wednesday, March 13th, 2:30pm at Austin Ale House (310 E 6th) and Thursday, March 14th, 4pm at The Lodge, (411 E 6th, between Trinity and Neches).

M: Thanks, Space! Good luck!

S: MUCH LOVE! #APMGANG
