I got the chance to talk with a female artist who has a style unlike anything you have ever heard. Kreayshawn’s wild video for “Gucci Gucci” caught the attention of people all over and put her under the spotlight. Between hosting the VMA’s pre show, touring, directing, preparing her upcoming album, creating pixel art, running Girl Gang and swagging on people, she has kept busy promoting her new single and we were stoked to hear from her!

She will be in Vancouver, BC on October 2nd at Fortune Sound Club. Get your tickets at www.kreayshawn.com. Hurry because chances are they will sell out soon.

Kreayshawn, thank you so much for taking the time to chat with We Out Here Magazine! First things first- lets talk about your new video “Gucci Gucci”! 3 million hits in the first week. How did that feel?

It was pretty exciting to see the show of love that quick.

So you’re in the midst of your fall tour right now. Is this your first time being on tour?

Yeah, I had a little mini tour that was New York, LA, Chicago, and San Francisco and it was super fun but this is gonna be like my first BIG tour.

It’s exciting to have support from fans in another country. Are you excited to wrap up the tour in Canada?

Yeah I have crazy fans in Canada! I’m going there tomorrow actually so it’s going to be cool to see everyone because I’ve never been up to Canada before.

We were excited to hear that you were nominated for Best New Artist at the VMAs this year. Was it a surreal to be nominated along side Wiz, Foster the People and Tyler, the Creator?

Yeah it was crazy when I was sitting in the audience watching everything. I got the chance to host the VMA pre show so I got to interview a whole bunch of celebrities and it was crazy to see how fast my life has changed.

In the past you’ve directed music videos, did it feel good to be the star of the video rather than behind the scenes when you were shooting “Gucci Gucci”?

Yeah it looks like it was a pretty good choice to make at that time too.

How is it different and is it more work to direct or be in the video?

Yeah it’s definitely a lot more work to direct. You have to do all kinds of things like figure out shots, location and the team. Then you have to think about editing and lighting and all kinds of crazy stuff. But you know, as a director, it was cool to be in front of the camera because I know what the director wants and stuff like that so it was easy to make love to the camera.

Which is so different because most artists haven’t been on that side of things so that’s something that is really awesome about you and we really admire here at We Out Here.

Ahh cool, thanks

So you definitely have a unique and creative style. Is there anyone who inspires your awesome wardrobe?

I would say that the 90’s inspire my wardrobe. Whatever I feel like that day- I’ll just throw something on. My mom always told me that I’m one of those people that can wear anything and make it look good so that’s what I’ve been doing.

(Editor’s Note: Swag)

Do you have any “go to” item of clothing or accessory that you love to wear or that you couldn’t live with out?

I’m a big gold person! My gold watch, my gold earrings, my gold chain. I’m always super golded out for sure.

You’re obviously really talented as a musician and seeing a young female so passionate about her profession is so encouraging to us. Who would you say your music influences were, growing up and who are they now?

Growing up I was always listening to a lot of crazy music, but a lot of my big influences came from girl power oriented stuff, like I would say the Spice Girls was a big influence on me. Just watching in the early and late 90’s a lot of female rappers like Da Brat, Missy Elliot, Nicole Wray, and Aliya. Just seeing a lot of girls make really good music really inspired me. It was like ‘oh, I can do this too’. I don’t’ second question anything just because I’m a girl.

If you could collaborate with anyone who would it be?

I would really want to do something different. Everyone is like ‘ohhh Kreayshawn, the white rapper girl’. I’d want to collaborate with somebody I can make a whole different sound with. I’m a creative person so I’m pretty sure I can make any type of music. That’s why I want to do something crazy like with Kesha or Madonna or some crazy shit.

Do you have any other styles of music you would like to dive into or do you think you’ll stick with rap?

My dream is to start an all girl punk band. I listen to all types of music. I’m like a genre hopper, I’d like to make everything. That’s why I think ‘Gucci Gucci’ is different than any other rap because it has a little bit of dub step in there and you know it has a whole different style than all the music on the radio right now.

Do you have any advice for other musicians that are looking to get noticed that have yet to be discovered?

I would say keep putting yourself out there and put as much stuff as you can out there. Keep being yourself.

What can we expect to see at your Vancouver show?

It’s going to be wild! We’ve been adding a whole bunch of different stuff to the show. I’m trying to put together a little theme for all my shows. So hopefully I can premier it up there in Vancouver.

Do you like meeting your fans at your shows?

It depends, there’s shows where its crazy and I wait awhile until it dies down but there will still be people waiting because they know I haven’t left yet. I met some of my youngest fans the other night and they were freakin’ like 8 years old! But yeah I’m always taking pictures with fans.

What is the best way for fans to hear about new music or upcoming shows?

I have Kreayshawn.com and twitter {twitter.com/kreayshawn}. It’s no one else tweeting for me.

So you personally update it?

Yeah, all the time. The other day I was like hella busy and had hella things to do and I was in the VMA radio room. I asked my manager to tweet something out for me and some people asked if he tweets for me and I was like ‘HELL NO, I tweet everything myself’.

That’s all the questions I have for you but thanks so much for taking the time to talk with We Out Here Magazine! We appreciate you and your talent. We can’t wait for the Vancouver show!
