We are humbled to have Esperanza Spalding make time in her schedule to answer 7 Questions for We Out Here Magazine.

Spalding said in a press release after winning her first Grammy,

“I can hardly express what a surprise and a thrill it was Sunday night to receive my first Grammy. In the category of Best New Artist no less. I was and am totally surprised. I am still overwhelmed with emotion and gratitude for all of the people who believed in my music and who voted for me.

Jazz artists aren’t typically nominated in this category, so that alone is special about the award this year. Bur, mainly I hope this will illuminate more than just an edge of the HUGE breadth of all that is happening in jazz music as a whole right now. So may this bright moment for me, also be a bright moment for my colleagues.”

Born in Portland, Oregon, she “taught herself to play the violin well enough to land a spot in The Chamber Music Society of Oregon” and reached a concertmaster position by the age of 15. She has appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel Live, the CBS Saturday Early Show, and National Public Radio. Spalding has also performed at the White House twice and is featured in a Banana Republic ad campaign.

Thank you Esperanza.

My Name is… Esperanza Spalding

I am… A jazz singer, composer and a bass player

I like it when…. When I’m practicing, playing music and in touch with nature

One thing I wish the Northwest would share with the world is… Its tram, the 17 Forests, the Dunes, and the Volcanic Monuments. The Northwest Forests provides trees for people, habitat for fishes, plants, and animals, and not to mention it is the finest recreation lands in the country.

One thing I wish the world would share with the Northwest is… music, food, culture, people, knowledge. It is an endless task to mention all what the world could share with the Northwest, and vise versa. We all have something to share, sharing is healthy and the world is full of give and receive, learn and teach.

Something I have coming up is… a New Album

This is exciting because… I will have a new challenge and I enjoy new professional challenges. Hopefully, by some formatting magic, some sonic magic, and arranging magic, we will share this music with a wider audience that is just more used to what is on the radio these days. So, that’s sort of the challenge. I don’t know if it’s going to work, but that’s the premise of the next record.
